Services

At Andrews Meadows vets, we offer a range of services for our clients and their pets. In making recommendations, we take into account the individual needs of the patient, the owner's preferences, the available options and what we believe is in the best interest of your pet.

Preventative healthcare

Vaccinations against infectious diseases are important. We still see cases of preventable disease in unvaccinated dogs, cats and rabbits. The annual vaccination booster is also an opportunity to perform a complete physical examination. While we hope not to find any problems, but the earlier they are detected, the simpler they often are to treat.

Internal and external parasites can be a nuisance and in some cases, a risk to your pets health. We are keen to prevent the overuse of anti-parasitic medications and will therefore recommend a bespoke approach according to your pet's risk.

Neutering

We continue to review the latest scientific literature relating to neutering pets. On balance, we feel that neutering offers more benefits than disadvantages.

Ovariectomy in female dogs and removal of retained testicles in male dogs, can be performed by laparoscopy (keyhole).

Female dogs: Reduction in mammary tumours, ovarian tumours, pyometra, unwanted pregnancy.

Male dogs: prevention of prostate disease, testicular cancer, inter-dog aggression, hypersexual behaviour, perianal adenoma and reduced risk of perenial hernias.

Cats: Unwanted pregnancy in females, Tom cat behaviour such as spraying and malodour and reduction in fighting (both in males and females) reducing the spread of infectious disease.

Dentistry

Dental disease is very common in cats and dogs. Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontal disease) accounts for the majority of dental problems. Although juvenile forms can occur in young cats, the majority of patients develop gum disease due to the build up of plaque and tartar.

The inflammation causes the gum to recede off the tooth leading to loosening of the dental ligaments. This causes tooth loosening, secondary infection, halitosis and pain. Intervening at an early stage can reduce the progression of gum disease.

Regular cleaning under general anaesthesia in combination with good home care and dental hygiene, can reduce the need to more invasive dental treatment and tooth extractions later in life.

Just as in human dentistry, we now use dental radiography to assist with decision making and for diagnosing disease below the gum line, which is relatively common in cats.

Surgery

For those patients requiring a surgical solution to their problem, Andrews Meadows offers a wide range of surgical procedures. Orthopaedic surgery such as Cruciate surgery (TPLO, CCWO) and luxating patella surgery are offered without the need for referral.

As well as the simpler soft tissue surgeries, we also offer more complicated surgeries such as BOAS, thoracic and cancer surgery. Both Dan and Dawn have considerable surgical experience and Dawn, having obtained the RCVS certificate in surgery, is an advanced practitioner in small animal surgery.

Most surgical procedures are completed in house, providing greater continuity of care and reducing expense.

Medicine and cardiology

Andrews Meadows posses the experience and equipment to be able to investigate the majority of medicine and cardiology cases. This includes digital radiography, a human quality ultrasound machine and endoscopes for examining the digestive and respiratory tracts.

We are also able to utilise key hole techniques where appropriate, to obtain samples for testing (e.g. liver biopsies). Andrews Meadows invested in a range of laboratory equipment so that in many situations, blood and urine test results can be obtained the day the sample was collected.

Dan has further qualifications in this field, having obtained a certificate in cardiology and certificates in small animal internal medicine. In combination with years of experience, this allows most medical issues to be dealt with in house.

Children's pets and exotics

Dan and Dawn both worked previously in a practice with a large exotic case load. We welcome rabbits, guinea pigs, small mammals, reptiles and birds, tortoises and chickens. In situations where it is deemed more expertise is required, we can organise referral to an appropriate practice.

For larger reptiles and birds of prey, we recommend seeking more specialist advice in the first instance.

Out of hours emergency

Sometimes emergency or urgent cases require care outside normal working hours. We recognise that when dealing with an emergency, it can be reassuring to see a familiar face. Dan and Dawn will be on call for emergencies and urgent cases:

8am - 10pm Monday - Friday

8am-12pm Saturday.

We have engaged with local veterinary practice, Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery, to provide cover outside these hours. Please see EMERGENCY SERVICES page on this website for more details.

House visits

We feel the majority of patients are best served at the practice where we have the equipment and personnel to manage the situation. However, we recognise that on some occasions, particularly with regard to end of life care, that this may not be possible. For those situations, we will endeavour to attend house visits by prior appointment for clients regsitered at  Andrews Meadows vets
